Pandora Ext TV out explained

On Youtube i got the question how i built the Pandora TV-Out. that made me realise that not everyone that owns a Pandora (or is interested in one) might visit forums as frequently as i do. Also, the previous blog post only had the Youtube Video Link.

So here is how i did it:

First of all, Wizardstan from the OpenPandora Boards decided to start looking for the external connectors.  Since the connectors could only be ordered in large batches, he organised a group buy.Still taking most of the risk, for which: thanks again :) This Thread contains it all, you can ask him there if he has any left, or preferred probably, in a Private Message.

I ordered 3 of them reasonably early since i want to use them for both an audio/video cable, and later on a data/signal cable for a robot project.

First of all the Pinouts, image from the PandoraWiki Hardware Hacking Section:

Mind that the pinouts shown are, as mentioned: Plug Side, not Wire Side. If you are soldering, mirror the pins.

If you want to mess with the GPIO's i suggest you take a look at This Thread. This blog post will only be about the Video Pins

The ones you need for a Video-Out cable are quite obvious. TV OUT 1, TV OUT 2 and Ground.

TV OUT 1 (Y) is the Luminance (intensity)

TV OUT 2 (C) is the Chrominance (color)

GND is ground (doh ; )

If you want to create an svideo plug, simply connect Luminace and Chrominance to their respective lines, and the other 2 to the ground. Check this wikipedia link for more info on S-Video and it's pins

After a future Pandora Kernel update, the pandora should also be able to natively output Composite Video. But if you want Composite Out right now (like me), you need to do a tiny bit of hacking (no worries, if you can solder the ext pins, this will be peanuts)  All you need to do is connect the Luminance signal directly to the composite signal line, and connect the Chrominance line there as well, but with a 470pF Capacitor inbetween. Like this:

The ground line is usually the uncovered wire on the outside. The Signal Line is the colour plastic covered wire in the middle.

If you never soldered before, make sure you find a soldering iron with a small tip. Also Pre-Tin the wires before you connect them, that will make thing a lot easier. And alligator clamps with base will save a lot of frustration, really... When you are done, and everything is connected solid, finish with a hot glue blob and optionally shrink wrap to finish it off.(remember the glue is an extra security, if the soldering is bad it might still break inside the blob).
